The Morning Mark – Tell Your Story

Good Morning! Do you have one minute to read and one hour to do? If so, you can improve your small business’ marketing in a big way. Each week, we will provide new ideas. Grab your morning beverage and let’s get started!

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: TELL YOUR STORY

Are you telling your business’ story or are other’s telling it for you? If it’s the latter, it is probably not being told as you would like it to be.

3 EASY STEPS

Step One: Let’s turn your mission into an interesting story about you and how your business came to be. Try answering these questions about your business to help tell your story:

How did you get the business started?

What problem does your business solve?

Why are you in this business?

What inspires you each morning?

What do you worry about at night?

What is the occasional moment when you know all the work is worth it?

What are your trying to accomplish?

Remember to be authentic when telling your story. Your followers want to learn about and be part of your business, as long as you keep it real.

Step Two: Now play “editor.”  A full “story” is too long for most social media. Take this story and turn it into a series of posts instead to run on social media. You can turn the answers to your questions above into individual posts.

For example, if every morning you wake up thinking about new ways to help nonprofits with your targeted software, your post might show:

A photo of you drinking your coffee with a notepad and looking out the window in thought. The copy might say, “I get my best ideas for helping nonprofits after my first cup of coffee.”

If your business is more corporate, you might show a screen shot of your features page and describe how motivated your team is in their early morning meetings by the thought of creating new features to help nonprofits.

Step Three: Space these types of posts out over the next few months. Over time, others will begin to understand your story.

These types of posts are great for relationship building, which is one of the outcomes that distinguishes social media from other digital marketing. When people understand your business on a deeper level, they are much more likely to convert and become loyal customers. Start telling your own story today!
