The Morning Mark – Start Here When Advertising on Facebook

Good morning! Do you have one minute to read and one hour to do? If so, you can improve your small business’ marketing in a big way. Each week, we will provide new ideas. Grab your morning beverage and let’s get started:

This Week: Start Here When Advertising on Facebook

So you’re ready to start boosting or advertising on Facebook? Awesome! This is where you’ll really get your ad in front of new potential customers.

I’m not going to lie. Because Facebook has so much to offer its advertisers, getting started is not an easy assignment. Follow these 3 steps to make the process of placing an ad simple and effective.

STEP ONE

Use what you’ve learned about your audience.

Think about everything you have learned about your audience. (from data, personal experience, scouting out what your competitors are doing, etc.) Now use this information to help you target both demographics (age, location, income) and psychographics (interests and behaviors). In other words: Don’t target everyone!

This is a difficult concept when you are just getting started with advertising. When you need a lot more customers, who wants to rule any of them out? All I can say is to trust me on on this, and over time you will see what I mean.

But here’s a quick explanation:

If you’re all things to all people, you are nothing to anyone in particular. You must be something to someone in particular to sell a product or service. Otherwise, they will buy from someone who is something special to them.

If you really must appeal to a broad group, figure out how to break that group into segments and create an ad for each sub-group. But this will complicate your life when you are new to Facebook ads.

STEP TWO

Think Small.

Start small.

– Use $10/day for your ad budget.

– Start with 5-day runs.

– Boost first. It’s 100 times simpler than using Facebook Business for ads.

STEP THREE

Pay attention.

Monitor results at least once a day. Let the ad run for 24 hours before you make changes to improve it. It can take up to 24 hours for Facebook to find your target audience.

Payoff: We can talk about how advertising on Facebook works, but the only way to really start learning is by doing. Facebook offers so many effective ways to affordably advertise your business that you owe it to your business to get started. Place a small ad this week and begin moving up the learning curve!

Next time, we will talk about building your ad.
