The Morning Mark – Is Your USP Obvious on Social Media?

Good morning! Do you have one minute to read and one hour to do? If so, you can improve your small business’ marketing in a big way. Each week, we will provide new ideas. Grab your morning beverage and let’s get started:

This Week: Is Your USP Obvious on Social Media?

Your unique selling point (USP) is the most important piece of information that people should know about your company. This is the data that helps people remember you. They literally use this information to file away your company name somewhere in their brain. Is your USP obvious to those who see you online? Let’s find out.

Get your USP ready for social media in three easy steps:

STEP ONE

Choose your words carefully.

Write down your USP. Every word matters, so make sure each is carefully chosen for maximum impact. Examples are:

  • “My salads are all-organic, made from locally grown produce.”
  • “My clothes are look great and feel great. With my product, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style.”
  • “My law firm is user-friendly. That’s right! Working through legal hassles is a lot better when it comes with a focus on customer satisfaction.”

STEP TWO

Get feedback about your company from recent posts.

Next time you’re at lunch with a business associate or acquaintance, show them six of your most recent social posts on your phone. Ask them to describe what’s unique about your company based on what they see.

STEP THREE

Start creating upcoming posts in one sitting.

Even if you have a grasp of your USP, there’s a very good chance that it’s not coming across in your social media. Don’t feel bad. This is a common situation for many small business owners. It’s hard enough to post on social media several times a week to begin with. It’s even harder to do “purposeful” posting.

Resolve to change that. To do so, start creating your social media posts for the upcoming week all at once. Make sure in at least one post your USP is coming across loud and clear. You can do this directly (word for word) or indirectly with stories, testimonials, photos, video – you get the idea.

Payoff: Each week, you’ll be posting about your USP in different ways and with different words. Overtime, it will start to sink in with your audience. Ask a business associate or acquaintance to describe your USP again after three months and see if you don’t get a better answer. Once your USP is working well, start thinking about other messages that you want to make sure are coming across on your social platforms.
