Picture yourself on an elevator. The door opens and your dream client, customer or investor walks in. Are you prepared to catch their interest in three sentences or less, because that’s probably all the time you have. Unless you are really good at thinking on your feet, you need an elevator pitch!
5 Easy Steps to an Elevator Pitch
Step One:
Write down the most interesting or innovative thing you can share about your business. Jot down whatever comes to mind. This is how you will get your target’s attention.
Step Two:
Succinctly write down the unique selling point (USP) of your business or what you do better than anyone else.
Step Three:
Now put the information from these two steps together. Starting with a sentence designed to grab attention; it is will be something mined from Step One.
Step Four:
Ask yourself if you have answered the question: “Why should they care about my business?” If not, make more adjustments.
Step Five:
Finish by suggesting a call to action that would imply talking more at another time.
Step Six:
Practice saying the pitch until it sounds natural and conversational. Start being aware of opportunities to use your elevator pitch. You may be “riding on the elevator” with a potential game changer for your business at any time. Be ready!
Practice makes perfect. Seeing how your words are perceived or asking a colleague for feedback can help you optimize your creation.
This pitch is a helpful building block to creating your 3 main messages in your 3-2-1 marketing plan. Your USP is part of message 1. What makes your business interesting or memorable is part of your message 2 and 3. What works well in capturing attention in person will also work in your posting!
